“Committed individuals may leave this world, but their legacy lives on in the hearts of those they served.”

It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that we remember the life and legacy of the late Engineer Sultan Jan Kaliwal—a devoted patriot, intellectual, and humanitarian whose service to Afghanistan and the Afghan diaspora will never be forgotten.

Born in the sacred land of Afghanistan, Mr. Kaliwal pursued a life rooted in purpose. He received his education with the goal of serving his people and emerged as a highly skilled and courageous engineer. His professional life was not only marked by technical excellence but also by a sincere dedication to national progress and collective upliftment.

In addition to his engineering work, Mr. Kaliwal was a passionate writer and poet. He penned professional articles, translated important works, and published literary contributions that reflected both the pain and pride of his homeland. His writings became a powerful voice for those who had been silenced—a bridge connecting Afghan history with its future.

Sadly, the foreign-imposed conflict in Afghanistan forced Mr. Kaliwal into exile. Though far from home, he remained deeply connected to his roots. The struggles of immigration did not weaken his resolve—instead, they fueled his commitment to advocate for his people on new shores.

In the Greater Toronto Area, he co-founded the Afghan Paiwastoon Community alongside fellow patriots. This organization became a cornerstone of cultural unity and support for Afghans in Canada. Mr. Kaliwal played an active and crucial role on its board, contributing to its vision, strategy, and community outreach until the final days of his life.

On March 17, 2025, he attended his last online meeting with the community—where he bade farewell to his friends and colleagues. Just two days later, on March 23, he peacefully passed away, entrusting his soul to Allah.

His funeral prayer was held at the Usman Jamia Masjid of the Islamic Center in Pickering, attended by hundreds of community members. He was laid to rest at the Islamic Cemetery in Richmond Hill, surrounded by the prayers and love of a grateful community.

Though his journey in this world has ended, Engineer Sultan Jan Kaliwal’s legacy continues. His humanitarian spirit, love for his country, and dedication to his people will always remain alive in our memories and our mission.

“May his pure soul rest in eternal peace. May his memory inspire generations to come.”
